ABOUT US

Who Are We?

The Universes Poetry is a an emerging literary journal dedicated to capturing the experience of awe.

What is Awe?

Awe is an overwhelming feeling of wonder of reverence. It can lead to a sense of self-transcendence, where individuals feel connected to something larger than themselves.

Awe is commonly inspired by nature, art, music, science, spiritual or religious experiences and human-kindness. And... poetry!

You can interpret the theme of 'awe' in a broad way (sometimes a well written poem can be an awe-inspiring experience in itself).

Benefits of Awe

Science suggests that feelings of awe can increase humility, strengthen social bonds, and even activate regions of the brain associated with empathy and altruism.

It can reduce stress, inspire innovation and creativity, enhance cognitive function, reduce inflammation in the body, improve our immune systems and even dilate our sense of time!

Research suggests that this unique emotional can also increase prosocial behaviour and concern for the environment.

We seek to harness the transformative power of awe through poetry.

The Bigger Picture

Although we believe that poetry and awe is worthwhile on its own, our wider mission is rooted in social action and climate awareness.

When people experience awe—especially when it is related to nature - they often report feeling more connected to the Earth and more motivated to protect it.

At a time when feelings towards the climate are governed by anger, guilt and shame, we believe it is increasingly more important to harness the power of positive emotion.

Think of it like this: awe is the seed, action is the blooming.

What Do We Look For in a Poem?

We look for poems that are lucid and clear with strong visual imagery. Think Mary Oliver, Wendy Cope or Billy Collins. Leave us feeling as if we have pulled back the curtain on the human experience. Leave us feeling awed!
